E1 - My Everyday Constellations

Week 1: My spaces mapped out and video of them in action.

My models with changes to the five spaces.

Week 3: My finished constellation. I used a more abstract concept of a jungle Gym to connect my spaces. I wanted something that showed how each space is interactive and has movement so I used monkey bars that extended from the trellis in the kitchen, a slide, swing and bridge so that each individual space became part of the jungle gym.
"People wear places like they wear shoes. A place shifts around you and you shift inside it, growing blisters and then calluses, becoming used to each other." N.D .Wilson
Floor turns into wall and wall turns into ceiling. We are structured by what encloses us. I wanted to create interactive spaces where you occupy them from above, below and become a part of them. I wanted to take a bookshelf from an applied ornament to becoming part of the wall, a structure that creates a moment of space; a place where you can't help but sit and wonder. Every time I step outside, close the front door and look at my porch I want to feel like I've just gone down a slide.  Every time I open the sliding door on my mini-van I want to pretend I just put the top down on  my convertible. So to make this feeling reality, I connected certain spaces in relation to what activity occurs in each, the way I reach those spaces and everything in between. I walk through the front door and skip down the stairs to my room. Several feet of floor are between the door and the top of the stairway but that span is relatively insignificant. The kitchen island and bookshelf are also separated by distance, but they  often carry the same feel of quiet and study. I wanted to express the spaces I inhabit daily with the scuffs and wear marks from the shifting, blisters, calluses and love that have become part of them.
