E1 Everyday Constellations

I started out with physical models of five of the most frequently used spaces in my life.

Space 1: Home desk, with bunk bed in background.

Space 2: Studio desk.

Space 3: Bunk bed.

Space 4: Closet.

Space 5: Couch and coffee table.

Next I reorganized the spaces into one constellation. This constellation separated the spaces by their uses and the privacy required in each space. The main purpose of this composition of spaces is to create excitement based on verticality. The composition has a slightly precarious construction. The top layer is much wider than the bottom layer that supports it. This gives the user a sense of vertigo once they reach the top, but also a sense of accomplishment. The layers of spaces are separated based on how private they are. The main living area is on the bottom of the composition, while the sleeping area is on the very top. The types of ladders also indicate this separation; the ladder to the study space is at a gentle incline which makes it more inviting to guests, while the ladder to the sleeping area is straight and slightly treacherous. Finally, descending from top to bottom can be another exciting opportunity due to a fire pole that runs the entire height of the building. This allows the user to descend in a completely different way than they ascend, enhancing and completing the experience.
